Overview…

This individual does not have the skills or knowledge required for their position, and the less said about their leadership ‘behaviours’, the better.

Many are just the living embodiment of the ‘peter principle’, a theory which suggests individuals end up being promoted to a level of incompetence – that is, they may have been great in an operational role, but as leaders? Forget it. The worst element of this ‘shit’, is that they are just that…in every aspect of their delivery.

As such, these ‘shits’ become skilfully adept at covering up and avoiding work/decisions and will never admit when they are wrong – that would be a chink in their already weak armour.

Signs to look for…
  • Avoids making any form of decision at all costs
  • Employment history will be checkered, unable to keep a position for any length of time
  • Often fills empty spaces with even more empty sentences
  • Will bury their head in the sand at the first sign of trouble
  • Blaggers are opportunists through and through
  • Will shout about their capabilities and contacts, but never back up either with positive outcomes
Survival tips…
  • Politely and constructively gain insight on how the ‘blagger’ will fulfil their promises, this will encourage them to engage their brains before their mouths
  • Be clear on any areas you are concerned your ‘blagger’ will not be able to fulfil, giving yourself enough time to make contingency arrangements
  • Ensure your decisions are evidenced-based. You can bet your last Rolo, the ‘blagger’ will do their utmost to avoid taking the fall when the proverbial hits the fan
  • Value your integrity and honesty, both keep you authentic – do not let another’s loose approach impinge on your own
  • Do not be afraid to challenge. If you think something is wrong, needs changing or addressing, raise it, that is what you are paid to do.
